Idiot-proof it!
I’m not a techie. But you know what? That means I’m part of the majority of computer users.
My feeling is that when software is designed, the companies do it without thinking about people like me. They fill it up with way too much information, and it becomes too hard to find the simple stuff I need to get something done. Sure, your software has a lot of great features, but I only need the basic stuff.
It would be much easier for me if the simple stuff was front and center. If techies and advanced users want to jump into the other features, have at it, but keep the simpler stuff where we can see it.
Heck, show someone like me your design before you put it out there. You might think it’s really straight-forward, but ask someone before you assume it is. It may well be less intuitive than you think.
