All sorts of data needed to be safeguarded from prying eyes: medical records, financial information, and credit card data, to name just a few. The benefits of digital data storage introduced the drawbacks of increased privacy worries, and weighing one against the other has been the challenge of the last 15 years.

Several government and independent agencies have tried to help standardize the methodologies that firms handling sensitive data use, with the goal of increasing and simplifying security measures. To that end, several pieces of legislation and regulation have emerged.

The challenge now, though, is meeting those standards. Each system of data privacy is unique and controls member firms’ data in different ways. Some standards govern who has access to the software that protects the files, while others insist on changing default passwords.
